31daysofhorror, day 29: The Babadook (2014)

Shoddy kid acting, Home Alone style resolution, Australians

Modern Australian horror really loves psychologically damaging single mothers, huh? Based on director Jennifer Kent’s 2005 short film Monster this 2014 film did the rounds in the meme world when Pennywise and the Babadook became lovers. Single mother Amelia struggles to balance a demanding worklife, unfulfilling love/social life and a young son with behavioral problems. When a mysterious handmade pop-up book appears on her son’s bookshelf their home begins to be infested by the grinning, skittering, dapperly dressed Babadook.
