Keywords: “shunting,” dull high school drama, old man melt fest
L’s quick review
I was initially excited for this movie because director Brian Yuzna was a producer on classic body/cosmic horror flicks Reanimator (1985) & From Beyond (1986). But Society was unequivocally not a banger.
It’s not the melting, butt-punching, goofy / goopy shit at the end that didn’t hit. Those scenes attached to a completely different movie would have hit hard. I didn’t hate them. I didn’t like them in the larger context of the movie — they were undeservedly funny.
What doesn’t work for me is the first 3/4 of the movie which functions as a mundane high school drama laced with strange but incoherent events. The script is stilted & not in a way that plays into the high strangeness of some of the characters — everyone’s lines are fucking weird (derogatory) even the normies.
If I didn’t have to watch this movie for the podcast, I wouldn’t have made it through.
