31daysofhorror day 3 — Boogeyman

What are the rules?, bad vibes Barry, I don’t even care though

Host review

So, I’m the only one who watched, rather re-watched, The Boogeyman, & really I could have just not. I’m going to give the C.H.U.D. rating right out of the gate – it’s 0.5 which ranks it as the lowest rated overall this week.
Let me start with the parts that make sense – they’re all on the production side. As I was watching, I kept thinking to myself this is like a bad episode of Supernatural & Barry Watson is giving Great Value bad vibes Sam Winchester – which makes sense because Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is one-third of the credited screenwriters.
The things that do work are the creative use of the camera to jar & confuse the audience & the desolate, interesting setting of the old house. Which reminds me of another film – oh yeah, Evil Dead. & hey look at that, Sam Raimi is one of the producers.
The rest though — it just doesn’t make sense. The lore rules are not convoluted or stretched, they simply don’t seem to exist. The underlying baddie is both in the individual mind & belongs to the history & lore or the – what entire area? It’s not contained to the house & yet our dude Tim was just living his best life for years without the house. If mom was holding it back & it was unleashed on him suddenly, how? Why? That’s not even explored.
In the end, it is unsatisfying. None of the potentially interesting meaning is developed. It’s just a dehydrated dude being weird & killing when he feels like it, but like sometimes he just needs a break I guess.
